Following playtesting and feedback from the last game, the following replaces the rules for Engineering as seen in the An Evening of Science and Mystery main rulebook available here: http://undergroundrpgs.com/Stuff/ESM%200.1.pdf
Instead of the card system, Engineering tasks will be completed by using props found in the game area or bought along by players.
Where specific plot related items are required, these will have a luggage label with a cog symbol attached to them to designate them as important components that cannot easily be replicated. On the reverse of these will be information about the items that only Master Engineers may read.
The following rules layout roleplaying guidelines for Engineering characters as much as game rules...
Apprentice: Inexperienced in their craft, Apprentice Engineers may repair broken components and gather the required tools and equipment for a job. However they lack the skill to undertake full construction tasks on their own. As a result, an Apprentice Engineer may only work on constructing a device from component parts under the supervision of a Journeyman or Master Engineer. To this end several Apprentices may act as assitants to a Journeyman when constructing a plot device.
Journeyman: An accomplished crafter, the Journeyman Engineer can construct devices at their leisure. However they are limited by the props available and the creativness of their own imaginations.
Journeyman engineers may use blue prints and other such technical diagrams to make specific devices to a reliable standard, but may find unexpected side effects if they attempt to push the boundaries of science too far.
Master: A virtuoso of their craft, Master Engineers have a unique understanding of the mechanical. To represent this they may read the information written on the reverse of any luggage labels bearing the cog symbol.
Master Engineers also gain one (1) of the following abilties...
"Interesting concept" - Once per game, the Engineer may replicate any one skill at Apprentice level for a duration of ten minutes through the use of a few scribbled notes and a wierd gadget.
"Golly" - The Engineer will not suffer any ill effects from being caught in the area affected by a malfunctioning device so long as they exclaim 'Golly' and immediately remove themselves from the area if the effects are persistent.
"Amatuers" - The Engineer can escape from any physical bonds used to restrain them by simply tutting loudly and exclaiming that those who created them were rank amatuers. The same applies to simplistic locks and other small security devices on ref agreement.
